FUE or FUT: Which hair transplant technique is right for you?

FUE is the most advanced and least invasive technique for hair transplantation.

What is FUE?

Follicular Unit Extraction, or FUE for short, is the most advanced hair transplant technique currently available. With FUE, individual hair follicles are removed one by one from the donor area at the back of the head using a precision instrument of 0.6 to 1 millimetre. The healthy follicles are then carefully placed in the zones where hair growth is desired.

At HM Hair Transplant, we work exclusively with the FUE method. Not because it is the most popular technique, but because it delivers the best outcome for virtually all patients in terms of natural result, recovery comfort and long-term quality.

Why FUE is the best choice

FUE stands out on every point that truly matters to a patient. No visible scarring, a short recovery period and a result that is indistinguishable from natural hair.

“FUE makes it possible to place each graft at exactly the right angle and direction. That is what makes the difference between a result that looks natural and one that looks artificial.”

How does an FUE treatment proceed?

The procedure begins with a thorough analysis of your donor area. The doctor determines how many grafts are available, what the quality of the follicles is and how many grafts are needed for the desired result. This also determines whether the treatment takes place in one or multiple sessions.

On the day of the procedure, the donor area is locally anaesthetised. You will not feel the procedure. The doctor then removes the follicles one by one using the precision instrument, after which they are checked and prepared. In the recipient zone, the follicles are placed at the exact angle and direction that gives the most natural result.

A full FUE session typically takes four to eight hours, depending on the number of grafts. You will be at our clinic for the entire day and leave for home on the same day.

What can you expect after the procedure?

The first days after the procedure are the most critical. The transplanted area is sensitive and mild swelling or redness may occur. This is normal and subsides within a week. Most patients are ready to resume their normal social and professional lives after seven to ten days.

  • Day 1 to 3: rest, no physical exertion, protect the scalp
  • Day 4 to 7: first gentle wash, swelling subsides
  • Week 2 to 4: scabs fall off, hair may temporarily shed (shock loss)
  • Month 3 to 4: new hair begins to visibly grow
  • Month 10 to 12: final result fully visible

What determines the quality of the result?

The final result of an FUE treatment depends on three factors: the quality of the donor area, the precision with which the grafts are placed and the aftercare in the first weeks following the procedure.

At HM Hair Transplant, we work with a fixed procedure in which each graft is placed according to the natural hair direction and growth angle of your own hair. That is what makes a transplant invisible to the outside world.

Aftercare takes place at home, but you are not alone. Following the procedure, you will receive a complete aftercare protocol and can always contact our clinic with any questions.

Is FUE suitable for you?

Summary

FUE is suitable for virtually anyone experiencing hair loss on the scalp, in the beard or at the eyebrows. The technique works best when the donor area contains sufficient healthy follicles and the hair loss has stabilised.

The only way to know for certain whether you are a good candidate is a personal assessment by a doctor. We do this without obligation during the free consultation.
